Meditation

The reasons that people stop smoking are varied, but most of them have an intention toward a state of wellness. Living a life of wellness extends beyond the body to the mind. A mind trying to free itself of an addiction like smoking - or recently recovered from one - will likely need some calming, some centering, and some focus. Meditation could provide the mind the respite and restoration it needs.

Most types of meditation involve sitting still, focusing the mind on the breathing, and perhaps saying a mantra, a special word. Some types of meditation also ask a person to become more mindful of the actions they're doing or the sensations and emotions they are feeling. While not all kinds of meditation are specific to a religion, there are styles that reflect Buddhist and Christian beliefs, among others.

You don't have to wait until you've read about different kinds of meditation or until you've been trained on the most advanced techniques. No need to learn Sanskrit or become a Buddhist. You can feel the healthy benefits of meditation with a simple moment's practice - just sit still, become attentive to your breathing, and count your way to a calmer state of mind.
